Needed: Pastors Who Are Men of the Word

One of the sad characteristics of the emergent church movement is the lack of serious study of Scripture. No one, it seems, wants to confidently say: "Thus says the Lord." A common saying from the movement is: "You really can't be certain that the Bible really teaches anything." Then why do we have our Bibles? I suppose for some nice stories and moral lessons about how Jesus lived.
Paul told Timothy to "Preach the word." It doesn't get any plainer than that. As I heard a seminary professor say: "Apply yourself wholly to the text, and apply the text wholly to yourself." Pulpits today lack men who are not afraid to do the work of properly unpacking Scripture in a responsible way. It is not popular in many circles to clearly exegete the Bible. "Let's all dialogue instead."
Paul also did say that the time was coming when people would no longer want to be taught sound theology. Instead they will want to hear stuff that makes them feel better about themselves, rather than about Christ.
My pastor is Chinese. His English is pretty good although he preaches in Chinese (I suppose because it is a Chinese church). But for some wonderful reason he truly unpacks the real meaning of Scripture and then shows what it looks like if I really believe it. That is the kind of men needed in pulpits today.
