Being the pastor of a traditional denominational church does have its rewards. One is those you discover who are teachable. They are truly hungry for what Scripture really means and how to apply it responsibly. That is also evidence of the life of Christ within. Those that are not teachable (No, I will not study that passage with you, I already know what I believe!) do make you wonder about the existence of the life of Christ within. Since we have embarked on a study of 1 John, it will be a grand adventure. But in thinking about eternal security I have discovered a lack of specific biblical teaching such as: what is justification? How about "presently possessing ETERNAL life"? What does it mean to really believe and follow Christ and why the two are inseparable? "Please teach us about grace; we have never been taught." What is the real motive for godly living? What is the difference between that and moral obligatory living? Realizing that the doctrines of grace have not been taught well or even at all presents a situation of often not knowing where to start. For now the issue is eternal security. I scratch my head because of all the evidence in Scripture that says true believers are secure forever. It is dependent upon the faithfulness of God and not that of the believer (1 Cor 1:2-9). You would think if God would describe for us how we lose our salvation when we mess up, it would be explained carefully in 1 Corinthians. But they are simply assured of their eternal security before Paul launches into how they have missed out on living by grace. It is and will be an adventure.
