One of the coolest things about ministry is realizing it is too big for you. You realize you do not have the knowledge you probably should have and wish you did. You do not have the experience of handling certain situations that could be beneficial right now. You encounter situations that are light years beyond you. You realize you are so helpless. You fear a situation that is looming. You know decisions have to be made. And what adds to all of that is that no one else in your present ministry knows how to help. Those that might be able to are also afraid. This might seem normal to a young inexperienced pastor but what if you are an older inexperienced (although well-educated biblically) pastor? You come to a point where you are absolutely naked and helpless before God with no resources of your own. Now, is that cool or what? Initially, usually not.
“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:8-9)
The promise of God. In all of the fear, uncertainty, unbelief, and helplessness, one thing is certain—God is with you. He assures you He is and that He will never abandon even when you are afraid and unbelieving. Every time I open my Bible I consciously step into the presence of the One who is greater than all my fear, uncertainty, unbelief, lack of knowledge and experience, and hesitancy. This is a good passage to memorize and pray back to God in those moments which seem to be frequent these days. You are "reduced" to absolute trust and dependence on the God who keeps His Word. Is that cool or what?
