The Lord Reigns: But Do I Really Believe It?

I do not have any hesitation to tell you that the Lord is absolutely sovereign over everything. EVERYTHING! But, if you ask me that I might respond: The Bible says so. Do I, me, myself really believe God is absolutely sovereign over every detail of my life? Do I really believe He “ordains my days” (Psa 139:16) and “orders my steps” (Pro 16:9)?
Recently I have been in a situation that is totally out of my control. It is hard and it hurts. I am challenged to discover if I really believe what I teach others. Psalm 93 says: The Lord reigns. Period. It is a simple stated fact whether I believe it or not. Even earlier the psalmist reveals his conviction that God really does rule over all even though present circumstances simply do not make any sense to him and cause him to wonder if God has forsaken him. To him it is not a matter of whether God is in control or not, but rather if he has offended the sovereign God of creation (Psa 89:38-51).
So where is comfort to be found in the midst of a difficult and painful situation that God is sovereign? The word “reigns” also includes the idea of counsel. God doesn't just reign; He gives counsel as He reigns. What counsel does God give? The rest of Psalm 93 gives a few ideas. The image of the sea is used in Scripture of unruly, even noisy people, and out-of-my-control circumstances. God says He is bigger and stronger than either in vv. 3-4. Verse 5 informs me His Word is trustworthy. I can trust Him in this ____________. His presence is with His people so the God who is bigger and stronger than those who cause grief and things that confound and hurt, is very present with me.
