It has been said that it is easier to obey the Lord than to trust Him. Obedience is carried out in well-defined areas: do this; don’t do that. Trusting is not learned in such clear ways. There seem to be no boundaries when it comes to learning trust. It is developed in times that do not make any sense; in moments of deep and unexplainable pain. It is during unexpected and uncontrollable crises that we learn what it means to truly trust the Lord.
Psalm 139 helps us understand why and how we can trust the Lord. It does not appear to have been written under overwhelming stress as other psalms were. It is almost as if the psalmist is telling us how to trust the Lord in order to be prepared for difficulty. Or it could even be looked at as God telling us why we can always trust Him no matter what.
Apart from this Scripture the Bible employs several metaphors to help true believers understand why they can trust God. He has made Himself responsible for those who really are His own: Shepherd/sheep; Redeemer/redeemed; Creator/creature; Bridegroom/bride; Father/child.
But Psalm 139 takes us deeper into the mind and heart of God; deeper than we would normally think even to a point where we have to throw up our hands and say: That is too much to grasp and too wonderful to understand.
For now just think on this:
There is no such thing as an ordinary event in the lives of God’s children. There is nothing that is too little or insignificant for God’s attention. He is concerned with and involved in my life beyond just when I read my Bible or attend church. He is not more present with me when I am in church than when I am not. There is no detail in my life that He is not concerned about. There is no moment of my day where I am not the center of God’s attention and object of His gracious transformation.
